Surgical Oncology

Surgical oncology is one of the most vital departments at the cancer center. Typically, all new patients coming to the center are first evaluated in the Surgical Oncology outpatient department (OPD). Following tissue or cytological diagnosis and clinical and radiological evaluation for operability, patients are admitted for surgery. Inoperable gastroenterologist, Dr. Gautam Nath, who joined as an Assistant Professor in 2023. Currently, endoscopy cases are performed, including upper GI endoscopy, lower GI endoscopy (colonoscopy), and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). Various GI interventions for cancer patients are also performed, including guided Ryle's tube insertion, the dilatation of postoperative strictures, and metallic stenting. The surgical oncology residents are trained in managing gastroenterology cases under the supervision of the departmental faculty. Apart from interventional procedures, gastroenterology OPD services are also provided to patients on a weekly basis. .

Surgical Oncology department is running MCh course approved by NMC from 2017 onwards with yearly intake of two students and is affiliated to Utkal University. From 2024 onwards it is now affiliated to the newly formed Odisha University of Health Sciences (OUHS). The students are selected from NEET-SS examination counseling.

To run this course the department is having experienced faculty members with the requisite qualification as per NMC guidelines.
